Over the past few months, I've gained new found respect for brokers.
A broker is someone who mediates transactions and relationships between two parties. Whether it's a buyer-seller, customer-customs, or father-mother relationship, someone must step in when reconciliation is not possible on their own.
Brokers exist to be the bridge between worlds that could never see eye-to-eye together.
On that note, I believe I've been a broker my entire life.
Even before I started out as a content writer, then as a scriptwriter and agency video producer, as a family business entrepreneur, and my expanding work as a thought logistician.
The best way I can describe my work right now is to read between the lines. This is where my affinity with reading and writing about the the nature of the world became the foundation for my brokerage skills.
Being an in-betweener/broker is not easy. It requires absolute presence of mind during a crisis, the analytical skills to identify the root cause of the problem, and the creative capacity to think of out-of-the-box solutions.
Most importantly, it requires an unreasonable level of empathy to understand both sides and bring any case to resolution.
I hope you remember that the next time you interact with a broker; when your logistics agent finds a good deal despite very tight margins, when your boss has to manage the expectations of the client for your project, or when your sibling prevents a fight between your two parents.
And more than anything, I hope you acknowledge the brokerage you've demonstrated yourself. Don't let it go unseen.
